In collaboration with the Island and Car International Forum.

Session coordinated by Ilan Kelman (University of Groningen)

A widespread pessimism characterizes many narratives about climate change affecting islands — including disappearance, mass migration, and catastrophe. This negativity generates discouragement and anxiety, making it difficult for island communities to care for themselves in a rapidly changing environment. Yet many of these stereotypes are not supported by current knowledge or projections.

The session will begin with an overview by Ilan Kelman of the various aspects of climate change affecting island populations, followed by an open discussion on how to reconcile emotional and physical well-being with the realities of climate change that islands are facing.
