PLOT
Welcome to the Countryside, directed by Giambattista Avellino, tells the story of a family on the brink of a collective breakdown who decide to leave the chaos of city life behind.
Gerry, an underpaid university researcher, his wife Ilaria, a traffic police officer constantly navigating the city's hectic streets, and their teenage son Giulio have all reached a turning point in their lives.
Maybe it's the tiny apartment they're forced to live in. Maybe it's the fact that their sex life has completely disappeared. Or maybe it's simply that the city is slowly suffocating them in its grey grip. Whatever the reason, the Fontana family makes a radical decision: it's time to return to NATURE.
Moving to the countryside and transforming a run-down farmhouse into a modern farm seems like the only way to restore peace to their lives, helping them overcome urban anxiety and their fears about the future. The only problem is that if there's one thing that's the exact opposite of peace and quiet, it's nature. And the Fontanas are about to find that out the hard way.
As they stumble through a series of misadventures—from a wealthy, overly friendly neighbor who plays at being a farmer, to young Giulio experiencing his first love, along with insect bites, botched drilling attempts, and disappointing harvests—their dreams of a greener, simpler life slowly wither away.
